14 Destination Birthday Party Ideas for Tweens

When the kids were younger birthday parties were pretty simple, but as my kids get older that is certainly changing. I have survived one too many sleepover parties at our house and I have also learned that parties that keep the kids active are always a big hit.
Rather than focusing on a theme, think destinations. Think about things your tween and his/her friends like to do and build the party around the activity. Older kids are less likely to get wrapped up in theme decorations and extras. They are more concerned about being with their friends and having fun.
1. Mini-golf is an activity that just about everyone enjoys. The latest trend in mini-golf are Golf in the Dark centers where you basically play golf in darkness and the course is illuminated with white lights and outlined in neon colors.
2. Bowling is another great option. Check ahead for group rates, student discounts and coupon deals. Divide guests into teams and have prizes for things like first strike, most spares, craziest split or highest score.
3. If the party is in winter or you live in cold weather area, check out the ski slopes for an afternoon 0f snow tubing.
4. For summer or warm climates, you can’t go wrong with a pool party or a day at a local waterpark.
5. All girls? Go to a local nail studio and get manicures and/or pedicures. We did this last year and our local studio gave us a group rate and were very nice to the girls – even giving them some nail care tips.
6. What about the guys? My son and his friends love playing Laser Tag or Paintball.
7. Got an animal lover? Have guests bring pet items like pet food, blankets, animal toys, etc in lieu of gifts, then take a trip to a local animal shelter to deliver the pet items.
8. Go to a local sporting event. Pro games can be a bit pricey for a group, but semi-pro or college teams offer just as much excitement for a fraction of the price.
9. Take in a local play or cultural event. Many community theaters put on excellent shows, have affordable matinee shows and some serve lunch or tea with the show.
10. Try Go-Kart racing. Indoor or outdoor tracks are becoming more popular and many offer party packages.
11. Learn something new. Take an introductory cooking class, pottery class, photography session or even make up class. Check with your local community college – they may have a student or professor who would be willing to do a group event.
12. Take a hike! Go hiking at a local state park and finish off the day with a picnic or cookout.
13. Amusement parks are a good destination for small groups of kids. Some amusement parks also have special events throughout the year like Haunted Houses/Park, Winter Wonderlands, and similar. Likewise and event like a county or State Fair can be fun, too.
14. My daughter just got an invitation to go to a birthday party being held at a local pumpkin patch where they have a hay maze. Since the party is in October – it’s a fitting desitnation.
What other destination type parties have you or your kids enjoyed? Leave us a comment and let us know.

We did a bowling/pizza party for my son last spring and it was a big hit. It definitely beats 8 to 10 tweens running in around your house or yard.
