This absolutely adorable cupcake cake was made by a good friend of mine for her son’s birthday. Inspired by Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar book, the cute little critter is so simple to make. Just bake your favorite cupcakes and frost all but one with a bright green. Frost one with red and arrange in the shape of the caterpillar. Use black icing to add the face and legs. This is guaranteed to be a hit!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday supplies are pretty hard to find, but you can buy the Eric Carle Birthday kit that includes24-page booklet with party-planning tips, recipes, and games; 20 festive party-favor bags; 20 colorful crowns; decorative ‘Happy Birthday’ banner; Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Elephant game; and more than 50 stickers. I also found this how-to to make very simple but sweet Hungry Caterpillar party invitations.
Actually, you could easily use this caterpillar cupcake cake for a Very Hungry Caterpillar inspired Baby Shower too. Check out this amazing 3 tiered diaper cake that would make a truly eye-catching centerpiece:

The three tiered Hungry Caterpillar diaper cake can be purchased through The Frog and the Princess.
